OK, this isn’t a psychological investigation, but I do wonder what makes me walk past a restaurant numerous times and never think of going into it, but rather choose one of the others within a minute’s walk? This is the case with Americana in Del Mar. Within less than half a block of the corner of 15th and Highway 101, called Camino del Mar at this point, there are eight places to eat. Well, whatever kept me from going in will never be known. It’s not that I eventually decided that it was the place to go to…. A friend asked me to join him for lunch and said we’d meet at the Americana. It didn’t even raise a blip in my mind, since I’ve never taken notice of the fact that I never chose it. After trying it for the first time, I’ll be eager to try it again; if I’m on the corner and wondering which restaurant to go into, it’ll get chosen at least 1 out of eight times!

Maybe I should arrange to be on the corner in the morning. The menu shows a good range of omelets to choose from, as well as the good stuff - Belgian waffles, pancakes and French toast, and of course normal breakfast faire.
Lovely patio, even without the waitress who was attentive, efficient, cheerful……. and hot, so even if she had bugged us too much (she didn’t) we wouldn’t have minded.

The patio on the 15th street side of the building looks a bit cramped, but has the advantage of a sea view.

It’s not a snazzy restaurant, as you can see from the ketchup bottle. The Portobello Salad was just what I needed – tasty with fresh greens and bread.
A little bit pricey, but this is Del Mar after all.

On the way to the restroom, there are some interesting photos of old town Del Mar. Of course, if you’re in a rush, you’d better check them out on your way back rather than on the way there!
Parking in the area is a problem. With signs like this to confuse us, the local PD is sure to pull in the $s. The staff say that they usually find parking on the streets on the East side of 101. Paid parking is available diagonally across from the Americana at the Del Mar Plaza, with entrances in Highway 101 and 15th Street.

VG Donut A sign that's hard to ignore
A sign that's hard to ignore.

There’s not a single key lime pie that I haven’t liked; I guess they must be quite easy to bake, or maybe just hard to mess it up. Only once have I sat back in my chair and said “absolutely lekker!!!”. That one came from VG Donuts in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, a community within the city of Encinitas. I tasted this at a friend’s dinner table and, since I hadn’t even heard of VG before (not surprising since I was new to the area), I made sure to visit the store soon afterwards. I crave donuts and have to force myself when I pass a donut store not to go in - I restrict myself to about 2 or 3 a month, so, though not very particular about donuts (again, it seems it’s hard to make a bad one and it’ll taste great to me just as long as it’s fresh), I do relish it when I find a really good one.

Looking good at the VG Bakery Looking good. Well, here's the view after a couple of delicious bites. I was impressed. So often the filling is rather sparce, and usually off center.
WOW!!!!!!! I took another bite, larger this time. An abundance of lemon filling….. how did they put so much in and not have the donut get all floppy or even start to leak? WOW!!!!!!! the donuts at VG Donut and Bakery are great

VG make it very hard to keep to my restrictions - it’s a good thing they’re 5 miles away from home. It’s not surprising that they’ve been voted “Best Of” numerous times and have been in the top five for the last couple of years in KGTV 10News’ A-List — the two bakeries that beat them in those years are not close to Highway 101, so I won’t be reviewing them anytime soon. VG is VERY GOOD!! They offer a range of donuts, cakes, pastries, cookies, muffins, bread and desserts.

A pleasant outdoor patio at VG Donut There’s plenty of space in the outdoor patio, and more room inside. Each time I’ve been there, I’ve had no problem finding a parking space.
